Determining who is at Fault

In collisions involving more than one vehicle and driver, determining who caused the accident will determine whose insurance pays for repair of the vehicle. Generally the insurance of the person who is at fault will pay for vehicle collision repairs. If they are uninsured, your insurance may pay for the repair if you have collision coverage.

Insurance Basics

When you purchase auto insurance, you are generally provided with a document that is many pages long. You read every page, didn’t you? Well most of us don’t and trying to figure out what the small print says when you are already stressed because of a recent collision can be frustrating. As you prepare to have your vehicle fixed, here are a few basics on car insurance as it relates to vehicle repair.

  • Liability Insurance

Most states require that you carry liability insurance. Liability insurance pays for bodily injury or property damage when you are at fault in an accident. It does not cover you or your vehicle, but covers the vehicle or injuries that were incurred by the other party as a result of the collision.

  • Collision Insurance

If your policy has collision insurance, it will pay for collision repairs to your vehicle after it has been involved in a collision. This coverage is not required by most state laws, it is optional coverage although generally required if you leased your vehicle or have a car loan.

  • Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive Insurance is optional insurance that will cover damage to your vehicle other than that caused by a collision. Generally covered are fire, theft, natural disasters, and damage caused by falling objects such as tree limbs.

  • Mechanical Breakdown Insurance

Similar to an extended warranty offered by car dealerships, mechanical breakdown insurance covers mechanical repair several major areas in your car such as the transmission or the electrical system. This coverage is optional.

Your insurance company will want estimates on your vehicle collision repairs. This generally means transporting your vehicle to a body shop, or two, and more lost time from your normal activities.
